Production company

Used in: Movie, TV show

The production company field contains the distributor of a movie. It lets you chose entries from the “company” and “network” taxonomy. To add a production company, simply use the field's search widget, and select the desired entry accordingly. To add another company, simply click on the “Add another item” button.

If you can't find the production companies you're looking for, simply add it either in the “network” or “company” taxonomy (depending on its type).

Some movies state “A X production”, but X stands for a person. Please don't add this person then, but only a company that was involved in the production. However, the company might be named after a person, in which case the company is to be added to the OFDb.

Co-Production

Sometimes the credits state “co-produced by” or “a co-production …” We want to add those entries as production companies as well.

Networks

Sometimes TV broadcasters or streaming services have their own productions. The production might happen under the same name as the network, or under a “production branch” of the network with a different name.

For the first option, we don't want a double entry and have the network in both the “network” and the “company” taxonomy. So don't create a “company” tag, but reference the “network” tag.

If there is a separate branch doing the production, the credits will state a different name than the network itself. Simply add it as a “company” tag (if it's not available yet), and reference it.

Examples

  • Forces of Nature: Broadcasted on BBC One (“network” tag), but the production company is BBC Studio (“company” tag)
  • The Good Lord Bird: Broadcasted on Showtime (“network” tag) and (co-)produced by Showtime (“network” tag)

Association

Companies and institutions listed as “In association with” are not added as a production company.

How to identify the production company(-ies)?

It can be difficult to know who the production companies are, if you can't use data you find in the internet. A production company might be featured under “presents” in the opening credits, but “presents” could also list the distributor or companies/institutions (co-)financing the production. Only add a company listed here as a production company if you're sure that is was actually part of the production.

The safest bet is to simply add companies that are featured as “produced by” or “a […] production”. You might find further information in the end credits as well.
